Message A few things I would try in the mean time... There is a faq on here on how to use sea foam.. Find it and do it. If it is lifter tick then that would help. I don't know which one you really want to hear but the solution to both is relatively easy compared to some things that go wrong on these cars..

If its lifter tick and sea foam doesn't improve it you can remove the plenum, timing belt, cams and gears, pull the lifters out with a magnet and rebuild them per the right up in the faq section. What happens is the lifters get grime in them over time and it keeps the check balls from sealing properly and the lifters don't hold oil pressure and they shrink down over time. Usually the sound go's away or gets quieter as the motor warms up.

If its the VTC gears, you can try replacing the springs in them as a band aid solution which may work, or just replace them with BDE cam gears.
